Melissa King, DVM, PhD, Dipl. ACVSMR
Assistant Professor Equine Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Dr. Melissa King is a Clinical Instructor in Equine Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Colorado State University Equine Orthopaedic Research Center and Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado. Dr. King earned her veterinary degree from Colorado State University in 1997; following graduation she completed a one-year internship at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky. Upon completion of her internship Dr. King returned to northern Colorado as an equine ambulatory practitioner focusing on orthopaedics and sports medicine. After practicing for 10 years Dr. King returned to Colorado State University to pursue a PhD in equine orthopaedics and rehabilitation at the Equine Orthopaedic Research Center. The focus of her research was to investigate the physiologic, biomechanical, and histologic effects of aquatic therapy on diminishing the progression of osteoarthritis within the equine middle carpal joint. Dr. King joined the CSU faculty in 2011 as a clinical instructor after completing her PhD. Dr. King’s current research interests involve the objective assessment of underwater treadmill exercise for the management of equine musculoskeletal injuries, as well as the biomechanical assessment of compensatory gait adaptations. She is currently researching the kinematic and kinetic changes associated with forelimb superficial digital flexor tendon core lesions treated bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells. Dr. King is also an adjunct instructor at the Animal Rehab Institute, lecturing on equine lameness conditions and current therapies.
